PTA to enforce biometric verification

31 Mar 2014

Sector watchdog the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that from 1 April 2014 no SIM in Balochistan or Sindh will be activated without biometric verification, Pro Pakistani writes. The measures intend to curb the sale of unregistered and unverified SIMs, which are used for criminal and terrorist activities. Under the PTA’s rules, customers wishing to purchase a SIM must provide their computerised national identity card (CNIC) and confirm their identity through a thumbprint scan – the scanner matching their print with their information in the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) database. The new registration process has been adopted in places but the older method is yet to be fully retired – Balochistan and Sindh are to be the first two regions to utilise biometric verification whilst Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are due to follow shortly.
