2degrees unveils LTE launch plans

24 Mar 2014

New Zealand mobile operator 2degrees has belatedly revealed its LTE launch plans, the National Business Review reports. 4G technology will be tested at ten sites across Auckland from 1 April, before going live in the city’s central business district from July. Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch will be added to the operator’s LTE footprint by the end of the year. The cellco has noted that the first phase of the trial is open to staff only. Huawei, 2degrees’ network partner, will be responsible for the 4G build, which will utilise the 1800MHz spectrum band.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Vodafone drew first blood with 4G services in New Zealand, launching commercial LTE in February 2013, while Telecom New Zealand inaugurated its own 4G network in November 2013.
