Airtel Bangladesh has launched Wi-Fi public broadband access services in selected parts of Dhaka in partnership with ISP IT Connect (iConnect), augmenting Airtel’s 3G mobile network coverage, after receiving regulatory approval for its Wi-Fi tariffs last month. According to the cellco’s website, five tariffs (including VAT) range from a 25MB (one-day validity) pack costing BDT11.5 (USD0.15), up to a 3GB (30-day validity) pack costing BDT345 for 512kbps access speed or BDT460 for premium 1Mbps connectivity. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, last year rival Bangladeshi 3G mobile operators GrameenPhone, Robi Axiata and Banglalink were permitted to roll out Wi-Fi hotspot services in collaboration with iConnect and other partners. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) stipulates that cellcos cannot currently offer public Wi-Fi services unless partnering ISPs.
