Nawras embarks on next phase of network modernisation programme

Omani telecoms operator Nawras has completed work to triple capacity of its 3.5G network along the Batinah coastline, as part of its extensive nationwide ‘turbocharging’ programme. The company has announced in a press release that it now provides a contiguous 3.5G coverage from Mutrah to Shinas, while customers in Muscat and Sohar are able to benefit from 4G LTE services. Under the next stage of the programme, Nawras will further extend its mobile network across major cities and parts of the central Wilayats during 2014. Rollout of the next phase began in the city of Buraimi, with Nawras successfully modernising all base stations, doubling 3.5G capacity and enhancing the online customer experience, and in April work will extend towards the Dhahirah and South Batinah governorates, including the cities of Ibri, Yanqul, Dank, Rustaq and Nakhal. The company’s plans also include the southern regions of Oman, including the upgrade of all Nawras base stations in the main city of Salalah. Since August 2012 Nawras has invested over OMR80 million (USD207.2 million) in its turbocharging programme, with the aim of providing a nationwide continuous access to its 3.5G mobile network.
