MobiFone, Vietnam’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers, is withdrawing from circulation around 200,000 pre-paid SIM cards that have not been activated in the past two years, VNS reports. The mobile unit of state-owned national PTO Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT) has notified its network of dealers that it is recalling the inactive SIMs, in a move aimed at ensuring the efficient use of resources. Last year another wireless subsidiary of VNPT, Vinaphone, also recovered around 100,000 inactive SIM cards from its retail outlets and dealers.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that MobiFone had a total of 35.1 million cellular customers at the end of December 2013, while Vinaphone followed with 21.6 million. The market leader is military-owned Viettel, which had around 58.1 million mobile subscribers at end-2013, according to figures from the Vietnam Telecommunications Authority (VNTA).
