Drone internet proposal creating a buzz for Facebook

6 Mar 2014

Facebook (FB) is said to be in talks to acquire Titan Aerospace, a small firm developing a pilotless, solar-powered ‘drone’ plane which could be used in an airborne internet data network to reach previously unserved regions as part of proposals for FB’s ‘Internet.org’ project, writes Bloomberg Businessweek. The drones are designed to fly uninterrupted for up to five years at altitude of 65,000 feet, and according to Titan are expected to be ready for commercial use next year.

FB’s rumoured ‘drone’ proposal bears similarities to Google’s ‘Project Loon’, involving the use of balloons to transmit internet signals to underserved areas, which began a test phase last year.
