Digicel taps into budget market for 3G growth

Digicel, Jamaica’s largest cellco by subscribers, has reported ‘double-digit’ growth in data revenues and subscribers in the three-months to end-December 2013, the Gleaner writes. Digicel CEO Barry O’Brien said the increases were driven by the operator’s new strategy to ensure that smartphones and data services are affordable and accessible, which included the launch of its own line of smartphones. The executive added that there had been a shift away from pre-paid data plans to post-paid offerings: ‘More and more customers are realising that when they purchase a data plan, they manage their data spend better.’ The cellco claims to have signed up 200,000 new users to its HSPA+ service, and is expanding its network to meet the additional demand. Digicel has begun deploying 170 new HSPA+ enabled sites, which will increase the coverage of the network from 80% of Jamaicans to 92%.
