CWC contracts Alca-Lu to complete all-IP network for LIME

4 Mar 2014

Alcatel-Lucent has announced that it is collaborating with Cable & Wireless Communications’ (CWC’s) Caribbean unit LIME on the deployment of a Microwave Packet Radio (MPR) solution that will also complete the conversion of the network to an all-IP architecture during the first quarter of 2014. With the vendor saying that the development will help ‘address the unique geographic challenges of island communications’, Alca-Lu will reportedly deploy its high-speed, high-capacity 9500 MPR throughout the several Caribbean islands which LIME serves. It is understood that the new system will serve as backhaul for the existing wireless networks, increasing existing capacity and speed. Further, the integration of the MPR into the existing 7705 SAR and 7750 SR IP/MPLS portfolio, all managed by 5620 SAM, will allow LIME to construct an end-to-end IP/MPLS network which in turn will allow enable the delivery of next-generation mobile broadband services including LTE.

Hector Nava, Alcatel-Lucent’s sales director for the Caribbean and Central America, said of the plans: ‘Across the Caribbean we are building an optimized and intelligent transport network for LIME that will provide better wireless voice and data access immediately while also supporting future growth to 4G LTE.’
