Etisalat, Huawei team up for 40G GPON trials

28 Feb 2014

Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (more commonly known as Etisalat) and Huawei have announced the signing of an agreement that will see the two companies trial 40Gbps Gigabit Passive Optic Network (GPON) technology across the Etisalat Group footprint over the next four years. Etisalat says the technology will eventually enable it to offer faster, and more reliable and affordable telecommunication services to households and businesses, including voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP), high speed broadband internet and IPTV, Emirates 24/7 reports. ‘We look forward to pioneering new fibre-optic services in the Middle East together with Etisalat and making it possible to enjoy a more immersive communication experience at home or in the office,’ commented Alan Wang, Huawei’s head of Etisalat Global Key Account,’ adding: ‘The 40G GPON technology will further enable Etisalat to integrate future upgrades with existing GPON deployment plans, giving more control over the total cost of operation throughout the entire life cycle of the network.’
