Taiwan Mobile Company is aiming to commercialise LTE technology by the end of this year using the 700MHz spectrum it acquired in late 2013. In terms of the network rollout, the Digitimes reports that the cellco plans to deploy between 8,000 and 10,000 base stations covering approximately 90% of the total population in the country’s main urban areas by the end of 2015. Meanwhile, it is understood that the mobile network operator may offer considerable subsidies on 4G smartphones with a view to driving uptake.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in October 2013 Taiwan Mobile was named as one of six companies to have walked away from the government’s auction of 4G-suitable spectrum, having acquired a total of 30MHz of new frequencies for TWD29.01 billion; it won the ‘A4’ block in the 700MHz band and the ‘C1’ block in the 1800MHz band.
