Telecom Italia and Enel strike deal to boost fibre-optic development

25 Feb 2014

Telecom Italia (TI) and domestic power company Enel have signed an agreement to share infrastructure on their respective networks in order to bolster fibre-optic development in the country, 4-Traders reports. The deal covers several different areas, including the prospect of carrying fibre-optic cables to street cabinets or to the home when required, through Enel’s network of electric pylons, which is seen as an optimal solution for reaching rural areas of low population density. Further, the two companies are planning to create a Smart Grid, which will consist of the electrification of Telecom Italia’s street cabinets and the connection of Enel’s network nodes via fibre-optic and Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology.
