Viettel Cameroon launch delayed until mid-2014

18 Feb 2014

The prospective commercial launch date for Viettel Cameroon has been delayed from March 2014 until the middle of the year, Agence Ecofin reports, citing deputy director general Moses Bayi. The executive told the news agency: ‘We had a lot of problems. Rains in some areas have considerably slowed the work down … But all these problems are being solved … Everything will be ready in three or four months.’ The article adds that reports of unrest between shareholders Viettel Group (70%) and local partner BestInver Cameroon (BestCam, 30%) have been exaggerated by the French press.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Viettel fought off rival bids from the likes of Maroc Telecom, Indian telecoms group Bharti Airtel and Technologie et Systeme d’information for the licence, after pledging to invest nearly XAF200 billion (USD400 million) in the rollout of a mobile network that will cover 81% of Cameroon’s territory from launch.
