Liberty Global eyes Brazilian move

The international pay-TV group Liberty Global, whose subsidiaries include Virgin Media in the UK, pan-European cableco UPC, VTR in Chile and Liberty Cablevision in Puerto Rico, is eyeing a move into the Brazilian pay-TV sector. The UK-based group is reportedly in negotiations with a number of Brazilian telcos and could move to invest in or acquire an existing operator via its Chilean unit. NexTV Latam reports that any acquisition would be funded with part of the proceeds from a USD1.4 billion bond placed by VTR Chile last month. Targets could include broadband operator and pay-TV provider Global Village Telecom (GVT) which is currently owned by Vivendi of France; the French firm is known to be seeking a buyer for the unit.
