Uninor to expand network by 30%

13 Feb 2014

Norwegian-backed cellco Uninor has unveiled plans to invest more than INR6.07 billion (USD97.98 million) over the next five months to improve network coverage in the six circles in which it operates by 30%. The operator claims the deployment of 5,000 new network sites will be its largest single expansion programme since launch. Following the rollout, Uninor’s network footprint will cover an additional 50 million Indians.

Morten Karlsen Sorby, CEO of Uninor commented on the project: ‘With this expansion Uninor will now extend its Sabse Sasta services [tariffs with unlimited on-network calls] to millions of new subscribers in its six circles even as we strengthen our network in the areas we already cover. Achieving profitability in record time shows that Uninor can continue to keep its most affordable tariffs position in the market while offering a profitable business proposition to its distributors and retailers and expanding its network coverage. This will continue to be our strategy in 2014.’
