Claro Uruguay, a unit of Mexican telecoms giant America Movil, has announced the commercial launch of 4G LTE services in the capital Montevideo. Chief technology officer Marco Iglesias said that around USD60 million had been invested in the company’s mobile networks last year, with a further USD30 million earmarked for 2014. Alcatel-Lucent supplied Claro’s LTE network, which will be gradually expanded across the capital and to other cities this year. The network, which is an overlay of existing 3G infrastructure, includes Alcatel-Lucent’s end-to-end LTE solution and IP Networking technology, enabling services such as HD video with video on demand (VoD), high speed mobile data, high definition videoconferencing and online gaming.
