The Brazilian postal service Correios do Brasil has inked an agreement with its Italian counterpart Poste Italiane to launch a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in Brazil, TeleSemana reports. Poste Italiane already operates a successful MVNO in its home market, with more than three million customers having signed up to its Poste Mobile service since its launch in 2007. The Italian firm now plans to use experience gained from its domestic operation to enter the Brazilian mobile sector by partnering with that country’s national postal provider. The firms have not yet settled on a network operator partner, but are hoping to have signed a resale deal by April. Mobile services will be sold at Correios do Brasil post offices across the country.
Brazil is currently home to two MVNOs, Portoseguro and Datora, but they have so far met with little success, with the pair claiming just 0.05% of the overall Brazilian cellular market between them at the end of 2013, according to figures from telecoms regulator Anatel.
