Orange tests FTTdp, inks NGA rollout deals

7 Feb 2014

Telekomunikacja Polska (TP), which operates under the Orange banner of its French parent, has partnered with Aethra Telecommunications to test fibre-to-the-distribution-point (FTTdp) technology. The duo completed lab tests of the technology in December 2013 and began field trials in Warsaw last month. According to Aethra the platform is comparable to fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) in terms of its capabilities, enabling maximum downlink speeds of up to 200Mbps for subscribers.

Orange has also signed eight contracts with the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP) for the deployment of next generation access networks (NGAs) in eight towns. Under the project, Biala Podlaska, Bilgoraj, Dzialdowo, Hrubieszow, Lubartow, Lukow, Ryki and Lutowiska will be covered by infrastructure capable of providing downlink speeds of up to 30Mbps by Q4 2015. The programme has been partially subsidised by funds from the European Union (EU), which provided PLN9 million (USD2.9 million) for the rollout.
