Japan’s leading fixed line operator Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) has published its financial results for the nine months ended 31 December 2013 (9M FY2013), reporting marginal growth in revenue of 1.3% year-on-year to JPY8.025 trillion (USD79.1 billion) from JPY7.922 trillion in the corresponding period of FY2012. In the period under review, NTT’s operating income decreased by JPY8.1 billion to JPY985.1 billion, due to a decline in revenue from the mobile communications business, partially compensated by growth in its data communications and international businesses. The company’s net profit, however, climbed to JPY484.3 billion, a 8.4% improvement on the JPY446.7 billion reported at end-December 2012. The company forecasts that its operating revenues will increase to JPY11.0 trillion in the fiscal year ending 31 March 2014, with projected net profit of JPY585.0 billion.

In operational terms, NTT’s fixed line subscriber base increased in 9M FY2013, as the company reported a total of 17.873 million ‘Hikari’ fixed broadband service users, equivalent to an increase of 572,000 subscribers in twelve months. NTT also reported marginal growth in the number of subscriptions for its video services, as Hikari TV and FLET’S TV users increased to a total of 3.841 million, up from 3.297 million reported in end-December 2012, and estimated that the number will reach 4.193 million at end-March 2014.
