AIS comes to financial aid of TOT's 3G project

6 Feb 2014

Thailand’s mobile market leader Advanced Info Service (AIS) has agreed to provide financial aid to state-owned telco TOT to help the latter implement the second phase of its 3G network expansion project, in exchange for network rental fees under an initial one-year deal, the Bangkok Post reports. TOT’s CEO Yongyuth Wattanasin revealed that under the agreement, private sector operator AIS will invest in the expansion of the 3G network (using TOT’s own 2100MHz spectrum) and rent the infrastructure to the state-backed enterprise. TOT’s plan to deploy an additional 13,000-15,000 3G base stations, up from its existing 5,320, has been frozen as it cannot access the necessary government funds due to the dissolution of parliament in the turbulent political climate.
