Myanmar hands out concessions to duo

3 Feb 2014

Myanmar has issued telecoms operating licences to Norwegian telco Telenor and Ooredoo of Qatar, paving the way for the duo to begin offering services, Xinhua reports. The two telcos won their concessions in June 2013 but the allocation of the licences was delayed for the government to implement a new telecommunications law. The 15-year concessions were presented by Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) and take effect from 5 February. Ooredoo and Telenor are currently deploying nationwide cellular networks with assistance from pan-Caribbean operator Digicel and Finnish vendor Nokia Solutions & Networks (NSN), and are due to launch commercial services by August 2014.
