Telenor Group could still consider other Asian developments

9 Jan 2014

Norway’s Telenor Group may consider undertaking additional projects in the Asian region alongside its planned launch in Myanmar, Reuters reports citing comments made by the company’s CEO. Telenor Group chief executive Jon Fredrik Baksaas noted: ‘I don’t think we are growing too fast. We have become a large system with significant capacity both in terms of financial and human resources,’ adding: ‘We have been in Asia for 15 years and we are always looking at the opportunities there.’

As noted in TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Telenor bagged a nationwide telecommunications licence in Myanmar in June 2013, with the concession requiring it to install wireless voice networks with 75% territory coverage for each region and state within five years of the licence award. The Norwegian group has, meanwhile, previously confirmed that it plans to roll out an HSPA and LTE-enabled network, reaching nationwide coverage within that timeframe.
