3 Jan 2014

Spanish telecoms regulator the Comision Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CMNC) has revealed that Telefonica Espana (Movistar), Vodafone Spain and Orange Espana are the three operators that will be required to contribute retrospectively to the Universal Service Fund for the year of 2010. As per the regulator’s resolution, with the total net cost for 2010 having been determined as EUR43.58 million (USD59.8 million), Telefonica will pay the largest amount towards this, with its mobile unit contributing EUR13.09 million and the fixed unit EUR16.40 million. Meanwhile, Vodafone Spain and Orange Espana will pay EUR9.30 million and EUR4.77 million, respectively. To calculate the contributions, the CMNC said it had taken into account the revenues generated by each operator in the year in question, once wholesale payments had been deducted.
