China’s second largest wireless provider by subscribers China Unicom has announced that it has chosen to use local vendor Huawei’s AtomCell small cell solution to improve its wireless network coverage in Harbin. The solution will improve indoor and outdoor coverage, enabling the cellco to provide higher data transmission speeds and more reliable network performance. Huawei noted that the challenge of meeting the rising demand for bandwidth has been particularly difficult in residential communities in dense urban areas, given the complexity of providing greater capacity through multiple walls and without available space for additional rooftop sites. The AtomCell solution is designed to address the issues, employing a small cell network using the same frequencies as its existing macro network. The solution also supports both wired and wireless backhaul, as well as end-to-end IP RAN networking.
