Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (MPT) has deferred its selection of a foreign partner, but gave no explanation for the delay, the Myanmar Times writes. U Aung Maw, the managing director of MPT confirmed the postponement, adding that further details were to be kept confidential. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, three consortia – headed by France’s Orange Group, Singapore Telecom (SingTel) and KDDI of Japan respectively – are competing for a tie-up with MPT intended to modernise the incumbent, preparing it for competition when new entrants to the market Ooredoo and Telenor launch services next year.
KDDI leads a consortium including Sumitomo of Japan and local partners A1 Construction and Myanmar ICT Development Corporation whilst SingTel has partnered with KBZ Group and Myanmar Telephone Company. Orange, meanwhile, has teamed up with Japan’s Marubeni Corporation.
