UPC Ireland to establish Wi-Fi network using STBs

16 Dec 2013

Irish cable TV, broadband and voice telephony provider UPC Ireland is poised to create vast new Wi-Fi network across the Republic, using customers’ own set-top boxes (STBs), according to the Irish Independent newspaper. The paper claims that UPC plans to use the STBs’ modems to provide Wi-Fi access for customers outside the home. The cableco says that its customers who sign up to the scheme to open access via their STBs, will receive free Wi-Fi access on the entire network. The cableco’s initiative forms part of a major investment programme and product launch under the guidance of new CEO Magnus Ternjo. Additionally, UPC Ireland says it is considering a move to offer mobile services to its subscriber base.
