11 Dec 2013

US-based mobile payments company Fortumo has announced the launch of mobile operator billing in Indonesia, the fourth largest country in the world by population, offering more than 200 million phone owners using Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Indosat and Axis Indonesia’s networks the opportunity to charge purchases for digital content to their mobile bill. In a press release, Fortumo confirmed that it is working with leading application developers and platform owners such as Rovio (Angry Birds), Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Barnes & Noble, Gameloft and Box TV to support the launch. Indonesia’s digital content market is estimated to generate revenue of USD244 million in FY 2013, although less than 10% of payments are currently made via credit cards. Furthermore, smartphone ownership is ballooning: the figure now stands at around 57 million, double the figure reported only a year ago.
