Cellcom confirms ongoing network sharing talks with Pelephone and Golan

5 Dec 2013

Israeli mobile network operator Cellcom has confirmed that it is holding discussions with other operators with regards to a possible 4G network sharing venture, Globes Online reports. The cellco is said to have revealed that it is conducting negotiations with both Pelephone, the wireless subsidiary of fixed line incumbent Bezeq, and one of the market’s newer players Golan Telecom. While talks between all three parties are understood to be focused on 4G network sharing, the report claims that Cellcom and Bezeq are also discussing the sharing of passive elements of cell sites for existing networks. While negotiations between the operators are said to be proceeding at ‘a record pace’, it remains to be seen what the Ministry of Communications (MoC) or the Antitrust Authority will have to say about the plans; both have raised concerns that deals between the nation’s more established operators could jeopardise competition in the wireless sector.
