Lycamobile Group targets eight new markets by Feb-14; Italian unit replaces H3G with Vodafone

UK-based mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Lycamobile has reportedly identified eight further markets in which it hopes to launch by February 2014, including Canada and unspecified countries across Latin America and Asia. Lycamobile, which generated sales of more than EUR1 billion (USD1.35 billion) in FY2012/13, currently claims a global MVNO base of more than 30 million users.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database writes that Lycamobile, which was founded in September 2006, is currently active in 17 markets: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. Initially targeted at expatriate communities in Europe, in recent years Lycamobile has increasingly set its sights on developing a global brand.

In other news, Lycamobile Italy, which became the UK group’s eighth operation, when it launched in June 2009, has reportedly ditched its long-standing agreement with mobile network operator (MNO) H3G Italia and selected Vodafone Italy as its new network partner. According to online portal, Lycamobile blames ‘coverage issues and contractual terms’ for the switch.
