Putin throws weight behind MNP law

27 Nov 2013

Russian president Vladimir Putin has signed a federal law obliging all domestic mobile operators to provide services for free in the event that they do not process a mobile number portability (MNP) request in a timely fashion. According to an unconfirmed report by Telecompaper, the law will enter into force from 1 March 2014. MNP services are expected to be soft-launched at the start of next month, but the brisk time-frame has posed problems for the country’s incumbent cellcos, many of whom have requested extensions while the appropriate legislative rules are finalised.
