Information Minister sacked; Gamtel in dire financial straits

27 Nov 2013

In a press release yesterday from the office of the Gambian President quoted by Freedom Newspaper, the Gambian Information Minister Nana Grey Johnson has been dismissed from his post with immediate effect, for reasons undeclared. The sacked minister’s role included overseeing the running of state-owned telco Gamtel, which is reportedly in dire financial condition with a lack of funding and straining under debts; the operator has been forced to delay paying employees their most recent wages, according to staff cited by the newspaper.

Nana Grey Johnson is also credited with ‘spearheading’ a recent law seen as restricting freedom of internet use.

Over recent months, Freedom has reported that President Yahya Jammeh’s administration has repeatedly had Gamtel senior officials arrested, questioned and released without charge, with no official explanation.
