CSL, SmarTone partner Hang Seng for NFC payments

25 Nov 2013

Financial institution Hang Seng Bank has entered an agreement with Hong Kong cellco SmarTone to roll out the Hang Seng mobile payment service to smartphone users from Q1 2014. Participating customers can use designated near field communication (NFC)-enabled mobile phones to make payments through MasterCard PayPass terminals at approximately 3,000 merchant outlets in Hong Kong. To activate the service, customers can obtain an NFC SIM card from SmarTone stores. After downloading the Hang Seng mobile payment app from the Google Play Store to an NFC-enabled smartphone, they can then download their Hang Seng mobile credit cards and use the phone to make payments.

The announcement followed a similar recent deal in which Hang Seng Bank has partnered with another Hong Kong mobile network operator CSL to extend its mobile payment service to CSL’s ‘1O1O’ and ‘one2free’ customers, allowing them to use NFC-enabled handsets to make payments at various retail outlets in Hong Kong.
