Telefonica activates VoLTE, fastest LTE radio cell

15 Nov 2013

Telefonica Germany, which provides fixed and mobile services under the brand O2, has announced the activation of its fastest LTE radio cell, capable of achieving data transmission rates of 225Mbps. The cell, located at the Telefonica building in Munich, uses LTE Carrier Aggregation technology, one of the main components of LTE Advanced. To achieve such speeds, an LTE device simultaneously connects to O2 base stations sending at two different carrier frequencies; the cell sites provide up to 150Mbps in the 2.6GHz band and up to 75Mbps at 800MHz, and by combining these data streams, download speeds of up to 225Mbps are reached. The LTE network technology and ‘Cat 6’ device prototypes were supplied by Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei, which plans to present the first commercial Cat 6 devices in the first half of next year. Telefonica has also announced that voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology can now be used within the O2 network, while handover from LTE to 2G or 3G networks will be made available during the next few weeks.
