South American wireless network operator Digicel Suriname has announced its plans to deploy what it claims is a ‘4G network’ next year. According to a company press release, 4G services will be available in the first half of 2014 and will provide Digicel’s subscribers with download speeds ten times faster than the ones currently offered over the existing EDGE network. Digicel plans to deploy the new network with 85% population coverage at launch and to extend the footprint of the offering in 2015. The company has pledged to invest USD20 million for the rollout, on top of a previous USD75 million investment. TeleGeography notes that the Digicel Group describes its HSPA+ networks as ‘4G’, while the company has rolled out a commercial 4G LTE network in Antigua and Barbuda.
