PT to extend fibre, LTE to far-flung Azores islands

31 Oct 2013

Portugal Telecom (PT) has announced that it is set to extend fibre-optic and connectivity and Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology to the islands of Flores and Corvo, which form part of the Regiao Autonoma dos Acores (RAA – Autonomous Region of the Azores). The telco, which has invested around EUR52 million (USD71.5 million) in the RAA over the last four years, has confirmed that to facilitate the plan it has signed a protocol with Fibroglobal, which owns the submarine cable that links Flores and Corvo to Portugal’s existing subsea infrastructure.

The RAA comprises nine islands and an islet cluster located in the North Atlantic. These are Flores and Corvo (to the west); Graciosa, Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico, and Faial (in the centre); and Sao Miguel, Santa Maria, and the Formigas Reef (to the east).
