Czech cellcos sign 2G, 3G network sharing agreement

31 Oct 2013

Czech mobile network operators Telefonica O2 CR and T-Mobile CR have signed an agreement enabling them to share their 2G and 3G networks in the country. The pair said that a deal was signed this week and that next week, testing will begin ahead of the proposed launch of commercial network sharing in 1H14. The tie-up will see network sharing extend across the whole country on a progressive basis next year, although the capital Prague and the Republic’s second city, Brno, are excluded under the plan.

As reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in August this year Telefonica confirmed that the proposed consolidation of both operators’ networks would significantly extend their previous agreement in which they have already been sharing part of their 3G networks. Under the plan, Telefonica O2 CR and T-Mobile CR intend to ‘split up’ the country’s roughly 10.5 million population into two geographic areas, each to be served by one of the operators. The move is expected to result in sizeable cost savings going forward as it will involve the consolidation of thousands of base transceiver stations.
