MTS Belarus launches new fibre broadband offering

30 Oct 2013

MTS Belarus, a joint venture between Russian giant Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) and the Belarusian government, has launched a new fibre-based broadband offering. Although exact details of the initial deployment were not released, the FTTx project eventually aims to connect 130,000 households to high speed internet services. Equipment partner for the rollout is Cisco, which has provided its ASR 9000 series core routers to expand the capacity of the MTS transport network and support IPv6 services. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, MTS is currently the largest cellular operator in Belarus, with more than 47% of the country’s 11.1 million subscribers at the end of June 2013, while it also offers broadband internet access via ADSL and limited fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) networks.
