The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) is said to be planning to levy substantial penalties on the nation’s smallest cellco by subscribers LG Uplus amid claims that it is continuing to offer high handset subsidies. According to the Korea Times, the regulator last week began examining the conduct of all three of the country’s mobile network operators with regards to potential violations related to handset subsidies, and an unnamed official was cited as saying: ‘The KCC has found that LG Uplus violated the Telecom Law by continuing its practice of offering illegal amounts in handset subsidies to lure customers from rival companies … Because an investigation of Uplus for misconduct is underway, we will announce the results after it is over.’
