ArmenTel slapped with AMD20m fine following Orange complaint

28 Oct 2013

According to local online news journal PanArmenian.Net, the country’s State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC) has fined ArmenTel (Beeline) AMD20 million (USD49,287) following a complaint from rival cellco Orange Armenia. The fine relates to a filing lodged by Orange to the antimonopoly body, accusing ArmenTel of breaches of its intellectual property rights (IPR) when it repeated its tariff plan ‘Simple’ – a branding Orange had registered back in 2011. Specifically, Orange Armenia complained at ArmenTel’s decision in September this year to launch a new promotion ‘Simpler than Simple’, including local calls costing AMD15.9 per minute, compared to its rival’s current offer of AMD20.0 per minute. Further, Orange Armenia was successful in challenging ArmenTel’s misleading advertising, which it said harmed the image of its competitors.
