Canadian quadruple-play operator Rogers Communications has posted consolidated revenues of CAD3.224 billion (USD3.121 billion) in the third quarter of 2013, up by 2% from CAD3.176 billion in Q3 2012. Consolidated adjusted operating profit for the three months ended 30 September 2013 climbed 4% y-o-y to CAD1.341 billion, while net profit fell by CAD2 million y-o-y to CAD464 million. Rogers highlighted wireless data revenues which grew by 15% from last year and now represent 48% of its mobile turnover.
In the three months ended 30 September 2013 the operator activated/upgraded 574,000 smartphones, compared to approximately 707,000 in the same period last year; the decrease in smartphone activations was attributed mainly to a 24% reduction in hardware upgrades by existing customers during the quarter. The percentage of subscribers with smartphones increased to 73% of the total post-paid mobile subscriber base at 30 September 2013, compared to 65% twelve months earlier. Net post-paid mobile subscriber additions were 64,000 in Q3 2013, 16% lower than in 3Q12; Rogers says it believes that the industry transition from three- to two-year mobile tariff plans may have slowed overall wireless growth during the quarter. Total post-paid mobile subscribers increased by a net 252,000 to 8.04 million in the year to the end of September 2013, while the pre-paid base shrank by a net 186,000 to 1.46 million in the same period, resulting in a consolidated net increase of 66,000 to 9.498 million cellular subscribers. Rogers’ residential cable broadband internet customer base reached 1.948 million at the end of Q3 2013, up by 104,000 in a year, with internet penetration reaching approximately 90% of its cable TV subscribers, compared to 82% at the same point of 2012, plus 49% of the homes passed by its cable network (unchanged year-on-year). Cable fixed telephony lines in service grew 8% from the third quarter of 2012 to 1.148 million, representing 53% of its cable TV subscribers, compared to 48% last year, and 29% of the homes passed by the cable network, up slightly from 28% last year.
