Mobile network operator Smart Communications, a unit of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), has launched a test of Cel-Fi technology in its network, a signal-boosting device that cuts out the problem of wireless dead spots inside homes and offices, whilst simultaneously increasing voice and data mobile reception indoors. The technology, designed by US-based Nextivity is able to support 60 simultaneous voice calls and support high speed connections reaching 42Mbps (i.e. DC-HSPA+) covering a maximum area of 1,200 square metres. Smart will use the trial to assess the benefits of Cel-Fi in both its 3G and HSPA+ mobile networks in the specified test area. A so-called ‘plug and play’ device, the Cel-Fi booster can be self-installed with no need for cables, antennas or configuration.
