Telenet to deploy Alca-Lu’s IP core router

22 Oct 2013

French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent has announced that it will provide Belgium’s Telenet with what it has claimed is ‘the world’s most powerful IP core router’. With a view to ensuring that it can meet the burgeoning demand for video and data services, Telenet will reportedly be Europe’s first cableco to use Alca-Lu’s 7950 Extensible Routing System (XRS). The system, it is said, will deliver significant operational cost savings by reducing requirements for physical footprint and power consumption, requiring only a single watt to switch a Gigabit per second worth of traffic. Commenting on the development, Bert Pelgrims, Telenet’s Network & Data Services Engineering manager, said: ‘Our customers are looking for high-quality experiences that are personalised, instantaneously shared and can be virtually stored and conveniently accessed anytime, anywhere and on any device. To do this we knew we needed a core network that could handle the massively increasing load from bandwidth hungry services and applications being used by our customers. We chose Alcatel-Lucent because the 7950 XRS is field-proven to provide the experiences our customers have come to expect and deserve.’
