TV broadcaster ABS-CBN’s plan to enter Filipino telecoms market hits obstacle

21 Oct 2013

Lopez Group-owned Filipino television broadcast firm ABS-CBN Corp says its plan to enter the country’s telecoms market via teleocms arm ABS-CBN Convergence (formerly Multimedia Telephony Inc) has been pushed back from October to November/December, due to what its chief financial officer Aldrin Cerrado terms last minute kinks. With ABS-CBN looking to establish itself as a possible number three player in the market – behind Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) and Globe Telecom – the official told journalists: ‘We are a bit behind but we are hoping to launch either November or December if we are able to fix some system issues.’ He added that issues surrounding the supply of SIM cards was also hampering its launch plan. The newcomer will use Globe Telecom’s infrastructure to support its launch. Under the plan, ABS-CBN will act as a traditional telco delivering its own content to end users’ mobile phones, devices and tablets, while Globe will provide wholesale capacity and coverage.
