18 Oct 2013

Spain’s Telefonica Group and China Unicom have announced plans to collaborate on the development and standardisation of network virtualisation technologies, Cellular News writes. The duo will work together on the virtualisation of mobile access and backhaul networks, and customer premises equipment (CPE). Enrique Algaba, director of network innovation at Telefonica commented that: ‘Telefonica sees the implementation of SDN [software-defined networking] and NFV [network functions virtualisation] technologies as a factor of our network infrastructure development strategy. We expect that the scheme for CPE virtualization we jointly propose will help us prove the viability of this technology and enable us to implement rollouts in a more flexible and reliable way coupled with low operating costs.’
