18 Oct 2013

South African telco MTN has received the first round of bids for its base transceiver stations (BTS) in Zambia and Rwanda, TMT Finance reports. According to the article, MTN is aiming to finalise the sale of around 400-600 BTS in Zambia and 1,000 towers in Rwanda by the end of the year; the potential deal is expected to generate around USD100 million-USD200 million. Unnamed sources have disclosed that towercos ATC, IHS, Eaton and Helios have all expressed interest in the auction; an unnamed private equity investor with experience in the US market had also reportedly entered the race, although sources claim that the PE firm had been unable to secure the required funding from banks.
