Lawmakers unanimously pass law to eliminate DLD charges

17 Oct 2013

Chilean lawmakers voted unanimously to pass legislation obliging telcos to treat all domestic lon-distance (DLD) calls as local, eliminating inter regional fees for users by the end of 2014. Sector regulator Subtel announced that the law will begin to be implemented 120 days after its passing into law, after which telcos have 180 days to complete the process, bringing the new rules into effect in the second half of 2014. The regulator noted that the first step towards the elimination of DLD fees was taken in 2011, when seven regions were merged for the purpose of calling charges, benefiting some six million Chileans. Under the new measures, Subtel expects the changes to cut the cost of long-distance calling by around 10%.
