Sonatel launches 4G trials; Tigo, Expresso receive ARTP approval for own tests

14 Oct 2013

Orange Senegal, the wholly owned subsidiary of Senegalese incumbent Sonatel, has reportedly launched a 4G network trial in the country, Agence Ecofin quotes the firm’s managing director as saying. Mr Sud Quotidien is quoted as saying that the cellular arm’s new fourth-generation network will be able to support data transmission rates ‘in excess of 100Mbps or greater than 1Gbps’.

The announcement comes as the same news agency notes that Sonatel rivals Tigo, a subsidiary of Millicom International Cellular (MIC), and Sudatel Senegal (Expresso), have been granted temporary authorisations by the regulator ARTP to carry out their own 4G trials over the period to 31 December 2014.
