Kenyan USF set to launch by year-end

14 Oct 2013

The Kenyan government has announced that its delayed Universal Service Fund (USF) is likely to be functional by the end of the year. Speaking to technology website HumanIPO at the Cisco Connect Kenya conference in Nairobi, Susan Mochache, assistant director at the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), commented: ‘We will have the USF operational by the end of the year, as the government is keen to successfully roll out [its] national broadband strategy’. Earlier this year the CCK indicated that at least KES74 billion (USD856.7 million) was needed to provide telecoms services in marginalised areas. According to the data from the watchdog, 72% of Kenyans still do not have access to the internet, while 11% of the population do not have access to voice services.
