International firms eyeing Montenegro’s mobile market

7 Oct 2013

Firms from Russia and Italy are rumoured to be interested in acquiring a fourth mobile licence in Montenegro according to local press reports which cite Zoran Sekulic, the executive director of Montenegro’s Agency for Electronic Communications & Post (EKIP). The regulator has still to announce any formal plans to award a new concession.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, there are currently three service providers in the country’s mobile market: Telenor (formerly ProMonte), T-Mobile (Crnogorski Telekom) and MTEL. In June this year the government announced plans to increase competition in the fixed line sector through the creation of a new state-owned telco before the end of 2013; the new entity will consolidate the fibre-optic resources of Montenegrin Railways, Montenegrin Power (CGES) and the Radio Broadcasting Centre (RDC).
