Regional network operator NetCologne has connected the first customers to its new high speed fibre-optic infrastructure in the town of Windeck, situated in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Rollout of the network began last year in cooperation with utility group RWE Deutschland. Approximately 7,000 households and around 650 businesses are now able to benefit from broadband internet at maximum download speeds of 50Mbps, but the firm plans to expand the network to additional districts in 2014, including Hoppengarten, Herchen, Stromberg, Niederalsen, Gerressen and Werfen. NetCologne is owned by the municipality of Cologne through utilities firm GEW Koln.
