Kabel BW boosts speeds for multi-play packages

Unitymedia Kabel BW, the German cable operator owned by US company Liberty Global, has increased broadband internet speeds for new internet and phone customers across Kabel BW’s footprint of Baden-Wurttemberg. The maximum download speed of the cableco’s ‘PLUS’ dual- and triple-play packages has been increased from 50Mbps to 100Mbps, while speeds of up to 150Mbps are now available for ‘PREMIUM’ multi-play packages, boosted from the previous data rate of 100Mbps. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database states that Unitymedia Kabel BW was formed on 1 July 2012 following the completion of Liberty Global’s merger of cablecos Unitymedia, which operates networks in the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, and Baden-Wurttemberg-based Kabel BW. Liberty purchased Unitymedia in January 2010 for an enterprise value of EUR3.5 billion (USD4.6 billion), before snapping up Kabel BW from Swedish private equity firm EQT in March 2011 for EUR3.16 billion.
